This will install java only as a plug in to your web browser. Warning: Do not install the Java software offered on the website. Once installed, you will automatically get updates to the latest version. If you want to compile Java code you can install the JDK (Java Development Kit) instead. Download and install the ‘JRE’ - this is the Java Runtime Environment. To get the latest version of Java you will need to download the Java JDK from. This will download an installer which will install Java and you are ready to go (you won’t need to restart the machine). You can download the ‘legacy’ Java 6 from here. The former option is easier but the latest Java may give slightly better performance. Alternatively, you can install the latest version of Java which is distributed free by Oracle. BEAST currently requires at least version 6 of Java and this can still be installed as an optional package from Apple.

Older versions of Mac OS had Java installed by default but this is no longer the case. To run BEAST on Mac OS X, you will need to have Java installed. The latest version of BEAST can always be found here: Installing JAVA
